I'll let him know that Tom, thanks.

Sandy,
It sounds to me like you're talking about some specific prior incident, where we may not have taken the action you felt we should have. Am I correct? If you would like us to revisit an issue you're having with a particular member who has threatened you, we can certainly do that. Please send us a case via the Contact Member Support form, or by sending a private message to myself or MaryAnne.

Tom,
Other members are using Feedburner, not I. However, there are several HTML based readers that are being used in the community today, including Feedburner. Can they all be reported for violating the TOS? I have several items/tools which come from other sources, some of which I use every day...like the LIVE HELP module on my daily posts. This serves as a valuable service to members. Are you informing me that I can now no longer provide this benefit to members under this new policy? ...yet members are allowed to collect data on others? I don't see how this policy is scalable, manageable or fair.

flit, I was not saying it would create mayhem, only that there are certain risks involved that will most likely have to be confronted at one point or another.

Thank you, Tom, John and commentors! I haven't joined in because I don't know much about widgets etcetera but I'm learning thanks to all of you.

Sandy,
I came late so I have to go back and read everything, but my husband refuses to come back to the site. He doesn't like this idea at all.

I would like to say to Debra, I know sometimes it's easy to follow others who don't know or just don't understand the rules. I am still at a lost sometimes on wether or not to say or do something. I do hate to be wrong. lol

Thank you for your time Tom and John, I appreciate you listening to my concerns.

Hi Kathryn- yes, the conversation space will stay active in the group. Others can return to read this conversation in the future.

"Perhaps the best way to think about this is an offline analogy."
I have one. I go to an establishment that has not had any problems in the past, and that most people believe is safe. I look through the window and see two people - one is someone who has threatened to harm me and the other is his best friend, the security guard. I know the security guard will protect him, not me. That establishment might feel safe to everyone else in the building, but it doesn't look the same for me - even if someone assure me the police will arrest both of them after they hurt me.

Tanya and Kathryn- Thanks for the feedback on using the group conversation space for live chat. We are exploring new alternatives to make real-time discussions easier and will test a few alternatives with you. We are grateful for your feedback and patience as we explore options to create improved conversation spaces.

Wow, I'm just in time to read the results. I can't imagine where the time went too.

Vic... given that they're paying us to play, it seems entirely unreasonable to whine about allowing Gather to get to the point where they are at least close to as functional as other sites.... the internet poses risks... and Gather cannot protect us against all of those.... they do a better job than many other sites.
But to suggest that allowing some widgets is going to cause mayehm is just over the top. I am (was?) a programmer...and I still teach people to use the Internet wisely .... and this fuss is all just plain silly

Will the space remain for people to read?

Friends- I know it has gone quickly, but we have reached the end of our hour together. We are really grateful that you all took the time to join us here today. We will leave this conversation live for those who wish to review it. John and I will hang out for a few more minutes to respond to the last open items here, but will wrap up after we have answered those. Thanks again for coming.

Debra- Thanks for the TOS feedback. We try to make general statements to provide guidelines for appropriate behavior. In certain circumstances we do add specifics. I will suggest that Pam reviews our TOS with this in mind and considers an appropriate change.

I agree that this space is clunky; slow and you have to wade through pages, which take time. The comment thread was much friendlier to use, but I know you have your group stats in mind, and so you are holding it here for that reason, which, of course, you can use to marketeers and potential ad revenue.

Kevin- The only widgets that can be installed on Gather are from our trusted providers. We filter the code from other providers. Can you show me an example of the widget you have placed on Gather from Feedburner?

But if a member were to add a widget, from a non approved source. . . and it wasn't blocked, would they be in trouble?
My concern is someone legitimately using a widget from another source that does indeed work on site (and I know of one in particular one that works on here, but isn't from the one of the three places you listed), will they get in trouble, since it is a failure on gather's part to block that legitimate widget.

Okay Tom, but that statement is quite general in TOS. I've had to write to MaryAnne a few times so that I understood specifically what was allowed and what wasn't. I have been confused on several occasions, due to what I see on Gather, and what I'm told I'm not allowed to do... (which looks like what I'm seeing, and is allowed)
Maybe being specific about the use of IP addies being exposed would cut down on more confusion. |

The Gather community is our inspiration. Today, the community creates Gather's content, organizes Gather's content with tags, and evaluates Gather's content by selecting the best stuff published through ratings and readership.
We want to take community involvement one step further and have the Gather community help create our product. This group as a place where Gather members can suggest new features and site improvements, critique existing functionality, report bugs, or point us to stuff you like online that you think we should include here at gather.com. From time to time, our product team will also use this forum to solicit direct feedback on questions we have. We may ask you to help prioritize features, select between different site layouts, or make key decisions that might impact the community. We do not plan to moderate content in this group, except to ensure that content published here is on-topic. Gather will benefit most from direct, constructive feedback from our audience. We will read everything posted here, but may not be able to reply to every suggestion. Please rest assured that multiple people at Gather will be following this group each day. Republishing prior suggestions to this group is encouraged if they remain current. Commenting on other's suggestions is encouraged as well, to help us better shape their thoughts. We are grateful to have so many bright, talented, engaged people here on Gather. We look forward to working with you to create a better Gather for tomorrow. Group Stats
